This website was developed to fulfill the requirements of EPS 415, Education Policy Studies offered through the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. The purpose of this team activity was to develop a technology-based, multimedia project that addresses one central theme of the course.
We worked as a team to develop this site to address the topic of Cyberbullying. Important attributes and requirements of this assignment were to consider and connect the topic to the following concepts:
1. What are the educational opportunities and challenges arising from these developments?
Educational opportunities arise from cyberbullying out of necessity. Educators, parents, and students all need to aware cyberbullying can come in many forms. Supplying individuals with information to make them aware of the issue will help them recognize when it is happening and what to do about it. It is a serious problem.
Cyberbullying presents challenges to everyone who communicates in the cyberworld. It is important for anyone in the educational process to be aware the threat exist. From an educators perspective, it is important to know what conditions the students are being exposed to. From the students perspective it is important to know when a cyberbulling event is taking place. Without this knowledge students could be exposed and could lead to obstacles that foster learning. In a worst case scenario cyberbulling could lead to suicide.
2. How do these problems relate to activities across different areas of life – not only in formal educational institutions per se, but also in informal contexts and activities of learning?
Problems related to cyberbullying such as blocks to learning don't stop when educators and students log off their computers. Cyberbullying can affect a persons life outside the virtual environment. Results from cyberbullying such as low self esteem, isolation, and depression can affect a persons morale. People who feel this way usually become sheltered and will disengaged with daily activities.
3. Where do you think these technological and social trends are taking the field of education?
Technological and social trends specifically in the area of social media are of special interest to the field of education. Students and educators are increasing becoming more involved with social media. Without proper protection of information shared in the cyberworld, it puts everyone involved in the education process at risk of being affected to some form of cyberbullying. These issues are taking the field of education in a direction to where we all need to be careful of what personal information we are asked to share. Education institutions need to ensure they have the ability to protect student information. At the same time, students need to be careful not to overexpose themselves to ensure they are not victums of cyberbulling.
